April 10-11: Camping Fun
On the 10th and 11th, we ventured out for another camping... adventure. And an adventure it was. We went to Battle Ground Lake State Park, which is a little less than an hour away from our house.
We packed up on Saturday morning, which later proved to be a slight mistake. We left the house at about 8 am and went to Our Daily Bread for a filling breakfast. We then cruised over to the campground. The directions on Google Maps were ridiculously wrong. Happily, we happened upon some well-placed signs (thank you Washington Parks!) and made our way to the park.
The park itself is lovely. The cabins are great, and nicely interspersed with the tent and RV parking. It was nice to be in a cabin with the trees (nearly opposite of what we had at Stubb Stewart).
A was adamant that he get to bring along his safety goggles and work gloves -- I'm not sure why he was focusing on it, but by it was important to him!
We quicly unpacked and then took a little walk. Our walk turned into a nice hike around Battle Ground Lake (which is thought to be a caldera of an old volcano). We did the upper lake trail, which was a little muddy and quite a hilly experience. Let's just say that that G and I were both carrying kids by the mid-point of the hike! A really, really wanted to go swimming, even though it was about 55 degrees. Silly boy...
After our hike, we thought a little lunch would be in order. Unfortunately, we discovered that we forgot our camp stove! Oops -- packing in the morning wasn't such a good plan after all... In any case, G got a big campfire going, and we roasted vegetarian hot dogs over the fire.
After lunch, I put Baby B down for a nap. We slept for about an hour, while G and A went over to the playground for an adventure. When G and A came back, Baby B and I woke up, but B still needed more sleep. In any case, we loaded everyone up in the van and took a little Saturday drive. We did the North Clark County Scenic Route (gorgeous!), and ended up with G and A both sleeping! :) B and I remained awake. I was enjoying the scenary, and B was playing with a kiddie microphone -- he does love the microphones! After we got back to the campground, A and G stayed and slept in the van for an hour or so. I put B in the backpack and we trotted around, exploring, for a while.
After everyone woke up, we made dinner (it was a little burnt), and then did our best to tire the kids out again. A had a great time trying to climb trees with varrying degrees of success and B emptied tubs. Good times!
In any case, the next morning, we were up, dressed, ate breakfast, and packed up by about 7 am. The boys do wake up arly when we are camping! We did the lower nature trail, which was much more challenging than we expected -- we thought it would be super-easy, but were surprised at how many rocky areas, as well as muddy areas, we had to get through. I ended up with A on my shoulders, and I have to say that the kid is getting pretty tall!
In any case, we hit the road. Happily, we found a lovely little coffee shop (sadly, the coffee pot was sitting back at our home with the stove) and were revived. We were home by 10 am. Awesome!
Great campground!
