Fossil, Day 3

We had another super day in Fossil. Today we hit our "vacation" groove, which is nice.

In any case, after a leisurely breakfast, we headed into town and visited the Fossil Museum, which was charming and pretty educational. The boys had a ball looking at things from the past. The Fossil Museum was technically closed for the winter, but they had telephone numbers posted if you wanted to visit by appointment. Some of the folks from the B&B had called and set up an appointment, so we tagged along as well. It was well worth the trip. The nice woman who showed us around the museum also opened up a one-room schoolhouse museum and showed us a sheep herders camper. Remind me not to sign up to herd sheep, but it was an excellent experience.

We then went back to the high school and searched for more fossils. We didn't find near as many today as we did earlier in the week, but the weather was so spectacular that we didn't mind.

Then, joy of joys, we went back to the ranch to ride horses. The folks at the ranch made a special exception and let Little B ride a horse, which they won't normally do. In any case, both Big A and Little B did a GREAT job listening to instructions and doing exactly what Nancy asked them to do. We also had Hillery, an honest-to-goodness cowboy, helping G and I with our riding. We actually were doing ok on our own -- our horses seem pretty used to hauling newbies around.

What do you think happened?!?! Joy of joys (part 2), there were cows and calves that weren't where they were supposed to be. Nancy and the boys went up a hill, "rounded them up" and we "drove" them down the road for a ways. Well, I think Nancy had someone go and put the cows back where they started from, but it was a grand, grand adventure for the boys. By the end of the ride, Big A and Little B were asking for jobs when they become teenagers. :-)  In all, we were riding for a good hour and a half. My knees felt it, but everyone else did fine.

Boy, though, the ride tuckered Little B out. We had a quick picnic lunch at the ranch and then headed out for a drive. We figured that at least if Little B was strapped into his car seat, he'd be more likely to fall asleep. And he did! We were in the van for two minutes and he was snoring. In any case, we decided to drive down toward Spray, Oregon, which is on the John Day River. The river is gorgeous. I hope we can float on that river some day with the boys.

In any case, Little B got in a good nap. We ended up going into town for dinner, this time to RJ's Restaurant.  The food was good -- Big A and I shared a pizza and G had a sandwich. Little B did a SUPER job eating pizza as well. G cut small little pieces for him and he chowed them down. I think the horseback riding made him hungry!  We got back to the ranch about 7 pm, and the boys watched television for a few minutes, and then happily passed out in bed.
