September 20: Camping was a HIT!

We had a *great* time camping! Once we finally got everything into the van and on the road, we had a really nice time. We stayed at Stubb Stewart State Park in a cabin. The cabins are excellent. The park is new, so everything is fresh. The cabins are little wood cabins. Ours had two rooms, one was a "living room" with a futon and table and chairs, and the other room had two sets of bunk beds in them (with the lower bunks being full-size mattresses). G pointed out that the mattresses were uncomfortable, but I pointed out that they were infinitely more comfortable than sleeping on the ground in sleeping bags. Mikey and Carrie and Pete and Allison got there the night before, so had set up a fire pit and everything.

Once we arrived, we went for a nice, long walk with Cayenne. B did well in the stroller, and A ran around and found bugs. Cayenne started to get tired/limpy, so G and I turned around with the boys and everyone else carried on for a longer walk. While they were continuing to walk, we got our cabin in order and got A and B settled in. Mikey and Carrie's cabin was "party central", so we headed over once they got back.

A had a great time playing football and sword fighting with G, Pete, and Mikey. He also got a reputation around camp as an excellent sword fighter! :-) B was a little snuggler, if nothing else, to stay warm. The weather was a bit chilly -- in the mid-60s.

We had an excellent dinner of brats and veggie hot dogs, blueberry and mango salad, coleslaw, and baked beans. Then we watched the sun set and the fire burn in the fire pit. We roasted marshmallows, and A had some delicious hot cocoa! Surprisingly, A announced that he was tired and was going to bed! G had to hop up to go with him!

B likewise was sleepy, so I took him over to the cabin and put him down. I stayed with the boys and read, while G went and hung out by the fire. I soon fell asleep on the sofa, which was actually pretty comfy. B did OK sleeping, especially for someplace different.

Even though the weather was really quite chilly, our cabin had awesome heaters and ceiling fans. I may never pack a tent again!

This morning, the boys woke up around 7 am. We had a pre-breakfast of mommy's magical banana-carrot-apple-crumb muffins and played hide-and-seek in our cabin (which was a stinking tiny cabin, requiring a good bit of imagination!). When the rest of the folks got up, we started up a campfire and I made breakfast of an egg scramble with broccoli, tofurkey, Swiss cheese -- rather tasty (at least, I thought so!) and more muffins. A fulfilled another Bob the Builder fantasy by making toast over an open fire. So cute!

Once we used up the wood, we packed up and headed for home. We got back at about 12:30, made lunch of personal pizzas, and then put A down for a much-needed nap. 2.5 hours, with not a bit of flap! Groovy! G went to band practice, I did some meal planning, and dealt with a fussy Mr. B. We then swapped -- G stayed with the boys and I ran out to get groceries.

When I got home, A was eating dinner -- corn dogs (he was the "hungriest boy ever, again!"). I made lemon-pepper papparadelle with asparagus and chevre for dinner. Sooo delish! A and B needed baths something fierce, so we tossed them both in the tub. I blew bubbles for A, and B just laughed and laughed as A broke them. It was really, really adorable to watch them play together. A is becoming such a good big brother, and really having fun with B, as B continues to get bigger! Such a fun weekend!

This upcoming week promises to bring some changes to the household. I start teaching on Wednesday, and then have orientation for grad school on Friday. Fingers crossed!
